AW Towing Winches for ARC 130 Icebreaker

Adria Winch secured a contract to provide towing winches for two icebreaking support vessels in the Aker ARC 130 series. The 121-metre vessels are being built by Vyborg Shipyard for Gazprom Neft and were expected to be delivered in 2017.

Built for polar conditions

Each vessel will be equipped with a Double Towing Winch featuring 2 × 100 tonnes pulling force. The setup includes two mooring drums designed for steel rope in a waterfall configuration, plus a Hydraulic Power Unit. Drum capacity is 7 layers of 700 m of steel rope each. An automatic spooling device ensures neat winding, while electric winches with variable frequency drive control manage operational speeds.

Material and coating specifications

All structural components are fabricated from low-temperature steel certified for sub-zero service. Surface treatment follows a three-coat marine system: blast-cleaned to Sa 2.5, zinc epoxy primer, intermediate epoxy build coat, and polyurethane finish rated for offshore exposure. Fasteners are A4 stainless throughout.

  • Operating temperature range: –50°C to +40°C
  • Drum capacity: 700 m × 7 layers, steel wire Ø 52 mm
  • Nominal towing pull: 2 × 100 t at first layer
  • Variable frequency drive on all electric motors
  • Automatic spooling device, remote-operable from bridge

Equipment that works where the sea doesn’t forgive — that is the standard every delivery has to meet.
